BENNINGTON â Efforts are underway to mark the 250th anniversary of the confrontation between 18th century settlers in the Bennington area and New Yorkers who were pressing rival claims to the same land.
Linked to the emergence in Vermont history of the Green Mountain Boys and Ira and Ethan Allen, the July 18-19, 1771, clash became known as the Breakenridge Stand-off after a farm near the Henry Covered Bridge over the Walloomsac that was a focus of the dispute.
Local historian Robert Hoar and Jonah Spivak, who have been active in the local group promoting a planned statewide celebration of the 250th anniversary in 2027 of the Battle of Bennington and other events around that time, said the Breakenridge Stand-off will be observed locally on July 18.
