Houma Police warn about phone scam

Houma Police warn about phone scam Staff The Houma Police Department is warning residents about phone scammers who are impersonating police to extort money from victims.  The scammers try to convince recipients that they have a warrant for their arrest and they must pay a certain amount of money or face being arrested, authorities said.  The proper procedure for someone to pay a fine would be at Houma City Court or the Terrebonne Courthouse, police said.  “A fine will never be paid directly to a police officer as this is not proper procedure and the Houma Police Department does not collect fines,” the department said. “We would encourage everyone to share this information and be cautious of these phone scams as they are constantly changing their efforts to victimize the citizens of Terrebonne Parish.”

Former Houma narcotics commander pleads guilty to multiple charges

Former Houma narcotics commander pleads guilty to multiple charges A retired Houma Police narcotics commander received probation after pleading guilty to stealing money and tampering with public records, prosecutors said.  Former Lt. Number of homicides in Terrebonne and Lafourche down in 2020

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office handled four homicides in 2020, which two fewer than the previous year. The agency investigated six in 2018.   There were no homicides in the city limits of Thibodaux this year, which is one of the few bright spots of 2020, Police Chief Bryan Zeringue said.  “Although last year we reported an increased number of homicides from one in 2018 to four in 2019, our officers continued to strive daily to make our community, the city of Thibodaux a safe place to live,” Zeringue said. “As we welcomed 2020, we set a number one goal to continue to build a partnership with our community to keep our city a safe place to live and retire. With a joint effort between the community and the police, we were able to eliminate homicides all together thus far this year. As the chief of the Thibodaux Police Department, I could not be prouder of the men and women who serve this this agency. As we embrace 2021, we’re going into it with these same goals. No

Terrebonne s top 10 stories of 2020

1. COVID-19 pandemic The global coronavirus pandemic hit Terrebonne Parish in March, wreaking havoc on every facet of life. By year s end, the parish had recorded more than 5,900 COVID-19 infections and 148 deaths. State orders aimed at curbing the virus s spread restricted business and social activity. Orders mandated face masks for anyone in public and encouraged residents to stay at least six feet away from others and wash their hands regularly. Schools offered a mix of online-only and in-person classes and limited class sizes on campus.  Houma-Thibodaux lost 5,800 jobs in April, the first full month of the state’s COVID stay-at-home order. Business closures and layoffs helped elevate the area’s unemployment rate to 12.3%, its highest since the late-1980s oil bust. The area regained most of those jobs by year s end, but the November total was still down 2,000 from a year earlier. Long lines became common at area food banks.
