Man indicted in deadly Houma party shooting
A Thibodaux man has been indicted in a deadly shooting that occurred at a party in Houma last year.
After reviewing the evidence Thursday, a Terrebonne Parish grand jury charged Landon Johnson, 23, with second-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Johnson is accused of fatally shooting 36-year-old Jason Livas, of Thibodaux, during the early morning hours of Nov. 21 at a party on the east side of Houma.
An indictment does not presume guilt or innocence but indicates the grand jury found prosecutors presented enough evidence to warrant a trial on the charges.
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office handled four homicides in 2020, which two fewer than the previous year. The agency investigated six in 2018.
There were no homicides in the city limits of Thibodaux this year, which is one of the few bright spots of 2020, Police Chief Bryan Zeringue said.
“Although last year we reported an increased number of homicides from one in 2018 to four in 2019, our officers continued to strive daily to make our community, the city of Thibodaux a safe place to live,” Zeringue said. “As we welcomed 2020, we set a number one goal to continue to build a partnership with our community to keep our city a safe place to live and retire. With a joint effort between the community and the police, we were able to eliminate homicides all together thus far this year. As the chief of the Thibodaux Police Department, I could not be prouder of the men and women who serve this this agency. As we embrace 2021, we’re going into it with these same goals. No
