Houma Police warn about phone scam

The Houma Police Department is warning residents about phone scammers who are impersonating police to extort money from victims.
The scammers try to convince recipients that they have a warrant for their arrest and they must pay a certain amount of money or face being arrested, authorities said.
The proper procedure for someone to pay a fine would be at Houma City Court or the Terrebonne Courthouse, police said.
“A fine will never be paid directly to a police officer as this is not proper procedure and the Houma Police Department does not collect fines,” the department said. “We would encourage everyone to share this information and be cautious of these phone scams as they are constantly changing their efforts to victimize the citizens of Terrebonne Parish.”
