Ivy Leaf Farms: Eliminating food deserts one at a time
Localish
Share: Ivy Walls always loved gardening and still remembers asking her parents to grow vegetables growing up.
But when she graduated from Prairie View A&M with a biology degree, she went to work for the CDC as an infection preventionist. She later moved to one of the medical systems in Houston, and moved in to the Sunnyside neighborhood.
As Ivy got to know her neighbors, she quickly realized the area was a food desert. A food desert is a region where families have limited access to healthy, affordable food. Ivy noticed all of the high caloric food options were made worse by the fact that 21 percent of Sunnyside residents don t have a vehicle.

Chris Shepherd joins CultureMap food editor Eric Sandler to discuss his busy 2021. Shepherd s Underbelly Hospitality has big plans for the coming year, including winding up One Fifth, opening Georgia James Tavern in downtown s Market Square Tower, and opening a new restaurant as part of the renovations at the Houston Farmers Market.
Good Vibes Burgers and Brews, 1329 E. Broadway, opens January 9 in Pearland. The new tiki joint and burger restaurant takes over the spacer formerly occupied by the original King s Biergarten, a move that surprised and disappointed many of the loyal patrons of Hans Sitter s Bavarian bar and restaurant, as we reported here in the
Houston Press. While some Pearland residents may be slow to warm up to the new concept, owner and executive chef Eric Nelson is eager to welcome the community to his exciting venture. Nelson has previous experience working for the Ritz Carlton hotel group, Valencia Hotel Group, The RK Group and most recently as executive chef and managing partner at Number 13 in Galveston.
