Letter: Vote yes for HPS Build 2021
By Andy and Lois Mulder
Holland
We urge a yes vote on May 4 for the Holland Public Schools Build 2021 Millage. HPS has been a good steward of our tax dollars. Consider how HPS has handled the COVID-19 crisis. While many districts offered only remote learning, HPS provided the option of in-person learning for its students since August 2020.
Safety practices and best practice protocols were followed. Teachers galvanized around our students following these best practices to keep themselves and our students safe. Nationally, we have witnessed how many school districts were unable to agree on how to engage students in classroom learning. But not in Holland. Thank you.
Boerman has utilized strong community partnerships to help bring opportunities to his students that they wouldn’t otherwise have.
“I’ve just been humbled by the community in West Michigan,” Boerman said. “In reaching out to different businesses or organizations or churches, there’s just people who say ‘How can we help? What can we do?’ Because of that, we’ve been able to obtain a host of different equipment that has provided opportunities for our students that they normally wouldn’t have.”
That equipment ranges from 3D printers and virtual reality headsets to a mobile kitchen unit and the school’s greenhouse.
HOLLAND When Brian Davis retires as superintendent of Holland Public Schools later this year, it won’t be the end of his career in education.
The longtime HPS leader will transition into a leadership role with the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators (MASA) beginning July 1.
Davis has been a member of MASA since becoming HPS superintendent in 2008 and has served as a region president and executive board member with MASA.
“When time came for me to retire and look for something different to do, this seemed like a perfect fit,” Davis said. “Getting engaged in an organization that’s membership driven, that supported me in my professional career, it’s an opportunity to pay it forward and pay it back at the same time.”

Period Project making a difference in Holland Public Schools
HOLLAND An new initiative at Holland Public Schools to provide students with menstrual products continues to grow and be successful.
The Period Project 49423 started earlier this school year and aims to reduce period inequity for female students, while destigmatizing talking about the subject for all students.
“Period poverty or period inequity is the barriers in place for menstruators to access hygiene products such as pads, tampons and liners,” said Candis DeBoer, a Junior Great Books Facilitator for HPS who helped organize the project.
“Period inequity isn’t new, much like food insecurity isn’t new. But the pandemic has served as a catalyst to widen that gap. We recognized that need and decided to try and see if there is a way we could help.”
