Holland Schools to interview seven for superintendent position
HOLLAND Seven candidates will interview for the superintendent position at Holland Public Schools next week.
The HPS Board of Education met Tuesday, May 18, to discuss applicants and the interview process. The selected applicants include one internal candidate, one from out of state and a pair of current superintendents.
The candidates are, in order of interview schedule:
Carlos de la Barrera, principal, Grand Rapids Public Schools
Alexander Cintron, director of bilingual education, Detroit Public School Community District
Tim Reeves, superintendent, Shelby Public Schools
Karen Sherwood, deputy superintendent, Holland Public Schools
Michael Pascoe, assistant superintendent of instruction, Portage Public Schools
Just two superintendents have been in their position for 10 or more years Spring Lake’s Dennis Furton (13 years) and Hamilton’s David Tebo (10.5 years).
With so many seasoned leaders exiting the room, how might that affect the educational landscape in Ottawa County?
“Education is losing a number of champions,” Tebo said. “There’s so much institutional knowledge that’s leaving our community right now. Some of the best educational leaders I’ve ever worked with are stepping aside. It’s hard to get your head around.”
Losing leaders
Five of the six retired or retiring superintendents had been leading their respective district for at least nine years, giving them plenty of time to impart lessons on some of the newer school chiefs.
