Tito Ortiz filed for unemployment despite Mayor Pro Tem job, owning two businesses Share this story Photo by Jean Baptiste Lacroix/WireImage Orange County Register public records show that UFC Hall of Famer and current Huntington Beach Mayor Pro Tem filed for unemployment with the California Employment Development Department on February 22. This is despite Ortiz being elected to Huntington Beach city council last November and being sworn in on December 7, 2020. On his unemployment application, under a section regarding reasons for leaving previous job, Ortiz wrote “Still working part-time or on-call – related to the coronavirus (COVID-19).” Huntington Beach city council members work part-time for the city and receive stipends and expense allowances. These payments have not been interrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pay checks go out to city council members every two weeks. They include the stipend of $81 and expense allowance of $698 for a total of $779.

Tito Ortiz the former UFC champion turned MAGA politician continues to be a lightning rod for controversy. The Huntington Beach Mayor Pro Tem posted two anti-Semitic images on his personal Instagram account while trying to argue against mask mandates in the United States. The first was a split image where the top half featured German soldiers giving Nazi salutes, while the bottom half showed two individuals wearing PPE mask along with the caption, “How could they all just comply? We would never do that. They must have been brainwashed.” The second image was cropped version of the Freedom for Humanity mural, which attracted criticism as anti-Semitic due to the stereotypical depictions of Jewish people. The mural depicts a group of men seated around a table under an Eye of Providence (the same symbol depicted on the United States one-dollar bill), playing a board game that rests on the backs of bent over naked figures. Several Huntington Beach City Council members are seeking to remove former UFC champ Tito Ortiz from his position as Mayor Pro Tem of the city. Ortiz was elected onto Huntington Beach City Council last year, and was subsequently selected to serve as the city’s Mayor Pro Tem. Regrettably, his time in office has been marred by a long list of serious blunders and embarrassments. The numerous mistakes Ortiz has made have resulted in several of his fellow council members attempting to have him removed from his position via a vote of no confidence.
