Kansas native named top editor of The Washington Post

NEW YORK – Sally Buzbee, senior vice president and executive editor of The Associated Press, was named Tuesday as executive editor of The Washington Post, succeeding the recently retired Marty Baron.
As AP’s top editor since 2017, Buzbee has directed AP’s journalism through the COVID-19 pandemic, Donald Trump’s presidency, the #MeToo movement, Brexit, protests over racial injustice and the 2020 U.S. election.
Her emphasis on live coverage of breaking news events in all formats, augmented by deep enterprise reporting, has helped yield top awards, including Pulitzer prizes in feature photography and international reporting, along with six other Pulitzer finalists.
Hutch Rotary to host Dr. Ed Berger

Hutchinson s Rotary Club will host Dr. Ed Berger at noon on May 3 at Stringer Fine Arts Center on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. The public is invited to attend.
Dr. Berger retired in 2014 after serving 23 years as president of Hutchinson Community College. He was elected as State Senator for Senate District 34 in 2016, serving on the Senate Ways and Means Committee, and as Subcommittee Chairman on Higher Education. He also served as Vice Chair of Public Health and Welfare Committee and was a member of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.
Dillons Fuel Center at 4th and Plum now open

On Friday, Dillon Stores celebrated the grand opening of the new Fuel Center at 429 E 4th Avenue in Hutchinson. The fuel center is located at the southwest corner of 4th Avenue and Plum Street, near Planet Fitness.
The new fuel center offers service for fourteen vehicles, both gasoline and diesel fuels, with 24-hour service. It also includes a service kiosk, complete with “on-the-go” items such as cold beverages, candy bars, and snacks.
The new Dillons fuel center represents a $1.5 million investment in Hutchinson.
Also at the ribbon-cutting, United Way of Reno County received a check for $85,945 to mark the annual pledge drive for Hutchinson Dillons associates and corporate gift.

Quilts
Quilts by Lucyle Jewett, Halstead’s nationally known quilt maker who was featured in the book Uncoverings 1997 published by the American Quilt Study Group, are displayed. Other quilts featured are by other Jewett family members with Quaker backgrounds that include Rachel Adella Jewett, Lucyle’s mother, and her grandmother, Hannah Little Smith. These quilts showcase exquisite quilting stitches, unmatched applique techniques and flawless piecing. An 1893 friendship quilt from the Fairview Quaker community, signed by thirty local women, is also available for viewing.
