Students 5-8th grade are invited to attend this year s virtual Youth Empowerment Summit, starting at 11 a.m. Jan. 18, hosted by Rise Up Reno.
Every year on Martin Luther King day, we have a summit just for 5th through 8th-grade students all over the state. This is a day to empower students to become future leaders, make great choices, and have fun.
This year instead of a full-day event, Rise Up Reno will host a shorter Zoom session which will allow attendance of even the busiest students. Speaker Dustin Galyon will deliver a keynote to inspire leadership, encourage decision-making skills, and entertain the group with his charismatic energy. First COVID-19 vaccines reach Reno County

The first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Reno County on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
The first vaccine was administered to Kristy Sourk, RN, who works in the ICU, Intensive Care Unit, at Hutch Regional Medical Center, at a little after 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The first doses were given at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and will be administered by a team from the Hutchinson Clinic.
After receiving the shot, Sourk clapped her hands and pumped her fist in the air. It s the best Christmas present. Absolutely, she said.
HRMC and Hutchinson Clinic collaborated on storage, staging and immunization procedures in an effort for the most efficient dissemination of the vaccine to frontline staff.

Coffee at the Cosmo
Coffee at the Cosmo at 9 a.m. CT on Thursday, Dec. 17, will feature a virtual presentation about the team that created the rockets that launched Americans into space. “The White Sands Rocket Team” will be streamed live on Cosmosphere’s Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/kscosmosphere/live and will also be available via Zoom at cosmomeeting.org. The presenter will be Cosmosphere Curator Shannon Whetzel. Public questions and comments are encouraged during the discussion.
Polar Express
For moviegoers, the holiday favorite, The Polar Express is back at Cosmosphere’s Carey Digital Dome Theater with showtimes every day between now and Jan. 3. There will not be showings on Dec. 25, as the Cosmosphere will be closed.
Springdale Printmakers to exhibit in Newton, Hutchinson

The Springdale Printmakers 2020 Prints Exhibit has opened at The Carriage Factory Art Gallery, 128 E. 6th, Newton. Fifteen artists from around the state have entered their artwork for show and sale as a fundraiser for Springdale Art and Nature Center, Halstead, KS. Springdale Art and Nature Center is a 48-acre farm donated by Beth Vannatta and has a non-profit 501(c)3 status. Beth, known since she was two years old as Piglet, was an art teacher at Hutchinson High School for 27 years from 1960-1996. She touched many lives during her teaching career and still keeps in touch with many of her former students, who also touched her life.
