Province makes permanent increases to rates for those in need

Nicholas Simons, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction (BC Gov) VICTORIA, B.C. – Over 300,000 British Columbians will benefit from one of the largest-ever permanent increases to income assistance, disability assistance rates and the senior’s supplement. Payments will start to be issued in April.  For individuals on income and disability assistance, they’ll automatically receive a permanent $175 per month increase. This will be the third increase in rates since July 2017. “This past year has been challenging for everyone, and especially for those British Columbians already relying on assistance to make ends meet. Now that we see signs of some economic recovery from COVID-19, it’s essential we provide the stability of a permanent rate increase for people and families, including 49,000 children who live in poverty,” says Nicholas Simons, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction.

Alberta regulator orders takeover of Mojek Resources wells, pipelines, facilities | Energeticcity ca

Mar 17, 2021 1:55 PM CALGARY The Alberta Energy Regulator says it is directing the Orphan Well Association and working interest partners of Mojek Resources Inc. to take over its wells and facilities after the company failed to clean up multiple spills and comply with multiple orders. The regulator says the escalation of enforcement was deemed necessary when the Calgary-based company failed to comply by March 5 with an order issued Jan. 4 requiring the suspension of its wells and facilities, discontinuation of its pipelines and demonstration of proper care of all of its assets. The AER says the OWA and Mojek’s partners are to suspend all of its oil and gas assets and ensure they are left in a safe state while addressing non-compliances at Mojek sites and confirming a working emergency response number.

Province launches new effort to restore legacy sites in Northeast B C

stock photo VICTORIA, B.C. – The Government of British Columbia is launching a new “first-of-its-kind” effort to restore oil and gas legacy sites in northeast B.C. The province says the program will support good-paying local jobs, clean up the environment, and work to restore traditional lands in the area. A “legacy site” is an area of land disturbance, like a seismic cut line previously used for oil and gas activities. The disturbance to the natural environment can have long-lasting effects on the traditional land used by Indigenous people and on the wildlife habitats. In most cases, the vegetation on these legacy sites was removed to allow for the movement of large vehicles and equipment. The sites were created when restoration or reclamation wasn’t something that was required. Standards are currently much higher.

A Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) investigation that began in 2014 in Chilliwack, targeting a Fraser Valley crime syndicate, has resulted in the seizure of millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs. The group operated out of Upper Fraser Valley and northern B.C. “This was a complex, multi-jurisdictional investigation affecting several areas throughout the province,” says Sergeant Brenda Winpenny, the CFSEU-BC spokesperson. “Illegal drugs, more specifically Fentanyl, is an extremely dangerous drug that is proving to have widespread consequences in our province. This investigation is a testament to the dedication and tenacity of our investigators to hold those who deal in drugs and are involved in criminal activity to account and brought to justice.”
