The Irish Pimpernell and the Gestapo Chief – Ireland s Own

The Irish Pimpernell and the Gestapo Chief When Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty – the ‘Scarlet Pimpernell of the Vatican’ – heard the massive explosion in Rome on the afternoon of 23 March, 1944, he knew he had to act quickly. Rome’s worst nightmare was about to begin, but one that, typical of the man, would have a compassionate ending, as PAT POLAND explains.   On 3 September, 1943, at the height of the Second World War, the Italian government surrendered unconditionally to the Allies. Shortly after, German forces began occupying Rome, and King Victor Emmanuel III and government officials fled to the south leaving the Italian army leaderless and in chaos.

By Olivia O’Mahony, Editorial Assistant Father Shay Cullen, a Dublin-born Columban Missionary based in the Philippines since 1969, has been given the 2016 Hugh O’Flaherty Humanitarian Award. Cullen (pictured above with his students) has worked tirelessly over a lifetime to promote human rights, justice, and peace, with a particular drive towards ending child exploitation and abuse of children in the Philippines. In 1974, Cullen set up the PREDA Foundation to help child victims and trafficked women who were being exploited in the sex trade. The award was set up to honor the life of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, an Irish prelate who, based in the Vatican from 1938 until 1960, saved over 6,500 lives from the Nazi forces in Rome during WWII. ♦

House salutes the victims of the Holocaust

The House of Representatives on Wednesday saluted the millions who died in the Holocaust. The commemoration is held annually to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, coinciding with the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945. Foreign Minister Evarist Bartolo recalled the horror of the concentration camps and said a visit to Auschwitz should be a life lesson for all.  He said tribute should also be given to the many who had, at great personal risk, worked to avoid further killings. The best way to prevent a repetition was for all to work for a world where there was equality and dignity for all.
