Since January 2020 up to April 23, 2021 a total of 6,845 bicycles have been stolen across the country, with An Garda Síochána recovering 2,139 bicycles. Many cannot be returned to their owners as their serial numbers are not recorded.  In Sligo/ Leitrim 26 bicylces were stolen in 2020 and 5 this year up to April 23, 2021 Of the bicycles stolen since January 2020 only 1 in every 5 bike owners were able to provide their bicycle frame / serial number when reporting the theft to Gardaí. This causes problems reuniting bicycles with their owners.

Gardaí have released figures this morning, which show that more than 1,000 bicycles have been taken since the start of this year, while over 5,600 were stolen in 2020. Last year saw over 200 bikes being stolen in Galway, 15 in the Mayo Garda division, 21 in Roscommon / Longford and 26 in Sligo / Leitrim. Gardai say a planned Cross Border Joint Agency Task Force Operation tackling rural crime was conducted along border counties today involving high visibility checkpoints and patrols on both sides of the border with gardai and the PSNI working in a coordinated fashion. During the operation Gardaí seized suspected cannabis herb valued at €16,500 and a quantity of suspected stolen property worth approximately €4,000. One man was arrested and charged in connection with this seizure and has appeared before Cavan District Court. Two people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs with a quantity of cannabis seized in both cases. This Cross Border Joint Agency Task Force operation included collaboration and cooperation with the PSNI, the Garda Armed Support Unit, and Gardaí from the Louth, Cavan/Monaghan, Sligo/Leitrim, and Donegal divisions.
