Clean-up of Lady Erin statue is urgently needed

The cleaning and repair of the Lady Erin monument at Market Cross Sligo needs urgent attention to allow it to be brought up to standard appropriate to its iconic status in Sligo according to councillor Cllr Arthur Gibbons. The monument was erected in 1898 to honour the centenary celebrations for the lost Sligo heroes who had fought in the insurrection of 1798. 2023 marks the 125th anniversary of 1798 and while it still a little bit away, Cllr Gibbons believes that because of the specific expertise required, planning needs to be put in place now to have the work done. Cllr Gibbon who previously served on Sligo Corporation pointed out that the The Lady Erin Monument also serves as a marker to signify the centric 1 mile to distinguish between the areas of Sligo Borough Council and Sligo County Council.

Short film explores lure of surfing

Sligo s coastline will feature heavily in a short film about surfing that is included in the line-up for this year s Dublin International Film Festival. Ebb and Flow features the experiences of three fearless females and their passion for surfing the waves off the west coast of Ireland. Filmmaker Alice Ward captures the mystical relationship these women have with the power and magnitude of the Atlantic Ocean s surf. Alice, originally from Dublin, moved to Sligo when she completed her multimedia degree at DCU. It was a spur of the moment decision, but one she has certainly not lived to regret. As a surfer, it was only natural that she would fall in love with the county.

Funding boost could mean a start this year for surfing centre

Work could start this year on the planned National Surfing Excellence Centre in Strandhill after a Government funding boost of an additional €350,000. Minister for State Frank Feighan has been informed by the Minister for Community Development, Heather Humphreys, that she has allocated an additional €351,493 to assist bringing the project to the construction stage in 2021. The project had been delayed due to increased costs associated with the project and issues of outstanding funding remain in order to get the project off the ground. The National Centre for Surfing Excellence Strandhill is a Category 1 project that was approved for funding of €615,752 from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund in November 2019. The project is co-funded with Failte Ireland which allocated €1,042,171, while Sligo County Council provided matching funding to its RRDF application of €200,000.
