The Sligo/Leitrim Garda Division launched Operation Dualgas last Friday as it responds to the changing trends of criminality.
Operation Dualgas will have a specific focus aimed at protecting and securing the division s coastline and waterways from criminal activity.
It incorporates An Garda Síochána s national Coastal Watch strategy, and aims to work with communities to facilitate the gathering of intelligence, relating to suspicious and criminal activity along the coastline, to analyse data received and act on same accordingly.
A pensioner who last week received a letter informing him of a 20% rent increase on his home has said Sligo County Council has gone too far .
The man, who has lived in his local authority house in Cranmore for 40 years has said this hike will be a huge strain on his finances.
The letter from the council informed him that his rent will be increasing from €65 to €77 from February 1st next. It s crazy. I m a pensioner, and between charges with bins and now this, it s crazy. They [the council] have you over a barrel, said the man.
He told The Sligo Champion that between paying for food, fuel, bin collections and now this hike he will be under financial strain next year.

Gardai in Sligo will today undertake a week-long campaign targeting the unauthorised use of disabled parking bays, and unauthorised use of disabled parking permits in Co Sligo.
They will also focus on other forms of illegal parking which interfere with the movement of wheelchair users or people with limited mobility.
Operation ENABLE is a multi-agency initiative, involving Gardai in Sligo / Leitrim, Sligo County Council, the Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland and the Irish Wheelchair Association.
The initiative aims to raise awareness to motorists that it s an offence under road traffic laws to park or stop in a disabled parking bay, and could result in a €150 fine.
