The Irish local government system is the most constrained, narrow based and weakest system in the European Union, the Mayor of Sligo, Cllr Declan Bree said when he spoke at the opening of a conference dealing with the future of local government in Ireland, held in Sligo last week.The event, organised by the Association of Irish Local Government (A.I.L.G.), the national representative body for local authority elected members, was officially opened by Minister Kieran O’Donnell, Minister of State for Planning and Local Government.

On Thursday 29th of June, members of Sligo Rowing Club and Sligo Kayak Club attended a meeting with Minister Catherine Martin T.D., Marian Harkin T.D. and Frank Feighan T.D., to discuss both clubs’ current activities and future plans.
