Srinagar records lowest minimum temperature in 30 years at minus 8.8°C
Srinagar registered its lowest minimum temperature in 30 years at minus 8.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday night, breaking a decades-old record. With this, the harshest 40-day winter period Chillai-kalan  ended on Sunday. This was the lowest minimum temperature recorded in the city since 1991, when the mercury had fallen to minus 11.4 degrees Celsius.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, had recorded minus 7.2 degrees Celsius on Friday night. The city had recorded a low of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius on January 13.
Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 10.2 degrees Celsius, down from minus 8.8 degrees Celsius the previous night, the officials said.

The IMD has predicted that parts of northern and central India will experience a fresh spell of chill in the next three-four days. Meanwhile, Delhi is set to experience another cold day on Monday. The national capital may experience a cold wave starting Tuesday (January 26).

As a severe cold wave has been sweeping the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that low temperature conditions are likely to continue over northern, north-central and northeastern India on Sunday, and is likely to ease from Monday to Wednesday.

SRINAGAR: Kashmir is in the grip of intense cold and Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded the coldest night of the last 30 years.
Deputy Director MeT Kashmir Mukhtar Ahmad said the night temperature in Srinagar dropped to minus 8.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
It was the coldest night in Srinagar in the last 30 years.
Earlier, in 1991, the night temperature in Srinagar had dropped to minus 11.8 degrees Celsius.
In 1995, the night temperature in Srinagar had dropped to minus 8.3 degrees Celsius.
The lowest temperature ever recorded in Srinagar is minus 14.4 degrees Celsius. It was recorded in 1893.
With the mercury dropping many degrees below freezing point, the water bodies including portions of the famed Dal Lake in Srinagar froze.
