Srinagar, Dec 9 (PTI) Srinagar experienced its coldest night of the season, with the minimum temperature settling below the freezing point at minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, officials said on Saturday. The temperature recorded on Friday night in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir was down more than two notches from the minus 2.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, they said.

Srinagar records lowest minimum temperature in 30 years at minus 8.8°C
Srinagar registered its lowest minimum temperature in 30 years at minus 8.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday night, breaking a decades-old record. With this, the harshest 40-day winter period Chillai-kalan  ended on Sunday. This was the lowest minimum temperature recorded in the city since 1991, when the mercury had fallen to minus 11.4 degrees Celsius.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, had recorded minus 7.2 degrees Celsius on Friday night. The city had recorded a low of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius on January 13.
Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 10.2 degrees Celsius, down from minus 8.8 degrees Celsius the previous night, the officials said.

There was a slight improvement in the minimum temperature at most places in Kashmir on Sunday, but there was little respite from the cold wave as mercury remained several degrees below the freezing point across the valley. Meanwhile, the MET Office said a Western Disturbance is most likely to affect the union territory for a few days from January 22.
Kashmir valley is reeling under an intense cold wave since the heavy snowfall earlier this month. The intense cold has resulted in the freezing of water supply lines and water bodies in several areas, including the Dal Lake here.
