Spencer Sacred Heart Given Award Through Iowa Naturalists Association and Clay County Conservation

Spencer, IA (KICD)– A small gathering came together outside Sacred Heart School in Spencer on Monday to recognize the students and staff for their role in environmental education.
Clay County Conservation Naturalist Brianne Blom says the Sylvan Runkel Award was originally given to Spencer Sacred Heart in 2019, but the pandemic kept the actual recognition from happening until this week.
Principal Amanda Woodall tells us one of the main projects Sacred Heart is taking part in is having a colony of bees housed on school grounds from funding that was secured by former Sacred Heart cook Kay Rose.
Spencer D.A.R.E Program Starts New Year

Spencer, IA (KICD)– The Drug Abuse Resistance Program or DARE has returned to Spencer schools focusing on helping kids avoid drug use as they continue toward adulthood.
School Resource Officer Darren Hansen tells KICD News while name of the program focuses on drugs, he likes to look closely at the relationship building between kids and law enforcement.
Lieutenant Kyle Van Otterloo oversees the program at Spencer Sacred Heart and Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School. He says the theme of personal responsibility is a lesson that can be carried into many facets of life, including what have gone through over the past year with the COVID-19 pandemic.
