Dr. Seuss exhibit recalls Springfield writer’s early childhood Posted May 09, 2021 The Baby s Biography: Theodor Seuss Geisel runs through May 23 at the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum in Springfield. Baby Books were commonly used to chronicle the infant years of a child. (Don Treeger / The Republican) Facebook Share Henrietta “Nettie” Seuss Geisel, mother of children’s author and Springfield native “Dr. Suess,” loved her children and cherished the experience of watching them grow. That, said Kay Simpson, president and CEO of the Springfield Museums, is made evident in the baby book she kept for him. In it, she notes that her son, Theodor Seuss Geisel, who grew up to be Dr. Seuss, first laughed on April 17, 1904, when he was about a month old. She recorded other childhood milestones and included newspaper clippings and a lock of Ted’s hair.

Soon-to-retire Springfield District Court Judge John Payne places historic John Hancock document in courthouse lobby Updated 8:46 AM; Today 5:26 AM Judge John Payne with a document signed by John Hancock that is now displayed near the entrance in the Roderick Ireland Courthouse in Springfield. (Don Treeger / The Republican) 5/3/2021 Facebook Share SPRINGFIELD After 20 years on the bench and many of those years spent in the Roderick L. Ireland Courthouse Judge John Payne thought there were no mysteries left for the building on State Street to hold. Payne, set to retire May 29 as presiding justice of Springfield District Court, knew all the rhythms of the building, every corner, shadow and hallway as well as the staff who made the courthouse hum. But there was one day he turned to regard a framed document that hung in his chambers and the first justices before him for a century.
