9 & 10 News December 14, 2020 LANSING, Mich. (AP) After Macomb County resident Erica Hammel’s son Wyatt nearly lost his life to child abuse she started campaigning for a child abuse registry. It’s been years of effort, but on Thursday the Michigan Senate passed legislation to create the registry. If it passes the House in the lame duck session, it will be called Wyatt’s Law. The measure would require the Michigan State Police to compile a computerized database of individuals convicted of child abuse offenses in the state, including their name and date of birth, which are often needed to find court records.

Bridge linking trails, communities reopens in Michigan s UP

December 14, 2020 GMT MUNISING, Mich. (AP) A $1 million bridge project connecting communities and trails in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has been completed. Officials with the U.S. Forest Service’s Hiawatha National Forest said the Doty Bridge on Coalwood Grade in Alger County recently reopened. The new 130-foot (39-meter) bridge over the North Branch of Stutts Creek replaces a temporary bridge in place since 2000 over a former railroad trestle near Munising, southeast of Marquette. “The bridge serves as a major link for snowmobile and off-road vehicle trails between many communities, providing a huge economic impact,” said Paul Gaberdiel, eastern Upper Peninsula trails specialist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
