Born in Woodford on March 30, 1944, the eldest of two children, his brother Stephen born 6 years later, he attended Cooper’s Company Guild Grammar School from the age of 11. After attending university, he married Jude in 1969 and turned his attention to teaching before taking on education television courses which were all the rage during the late 1960s.
