An economic experiment in the Berkshires wins new attention in the COVID downturn.

Last spring, shortly after it became clear that COVID-19 was more than just a little flu and that local shops would be down and out for more than just a little while, America got to wondering: How can we save small businesses?
Many commentators demanded quick federal relief. Some consumers went on gift card shopping sprees. And 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang tweeted a proposal combining the two â government-issued debit cards redeemable only at locally owned small businesses.
PITTSFIELD â What does it take to be the best in the Berkshires?
If youâre talking about the Best of the Berkshires contest, it takes more than 20,000 votes of confidence and appreciation, of course!
This yearâs nomination entries flowed fast and furiously into The Eagle over the past month, with print and digital ballots being cast in 197 categories, says Kate Teutsch, director of advertising services for The Eagle. Lots of ballots were dropped off in person at The Eagleâs offices, too.
âPeople who live and work here really make an effort for this contest,â says Teutsch.
Four of this yearâs winners of the Best of the Berkshires contest â the Animal Inn of the Berkshires, Berkshire Roots, Lee Bank, and Berkshire Bike and Board â are no strangers to the contest, having won Best-of honors in years past.
