Portion U S 250 will remain closed for weeks due to rockslide in Nelson County

View Comments AFTON It s been over two weeks since a large rockslide shutdown a portion of U.S. 250 in Nelson County. Virginia Department of Transportation is will be weeks before the section will be stable enough to reopen.  Lou Hatter, spokesperson for VDOT Culpeper region, said the slide started May 3 and the 1.75 mile long portion of U.S. 250 between Va. 151 and Va. 6 was shutdown mid-day.  Hatter said there s no definitive source of what caused the slide, but there are a few contributing factors.  That area is prone to ground movement because of the nature of the material that s there, he said. 

Suspect arrested in Rockingham County homicide

View Comments CLOVER HILL A 19-year-old suspect has been charged in the slaying of a Dayton man who was found dead early Wednesday morning in Rockingham County, a press release said. Shortly after 5 a.m., the Rockingham County Sheriff s Office responded to Whitmore Shop Road, near the intersection of Mount Clinton Pike, for a medical emergency. Minutes later, another call came in for a disorderly conduct complaint on Eden Valley Road in close proximity to the location of the first call. Deputies immediately responded to both locations to investigate, authorities said. At the scene of the first call, authorities found the body of 46-year-old Chad A. Mines of Dayton.

Staunton approves school calendar for next academic year

STAUNTON The academic calendar for next year has been approved by the Staunton School Board.  “We do intend to be back five days a week,” Superintendent Garett Smith said during Monday night’s School Board meeting. Staunton City Schools will begin next year on Tuesday, Aug. 10, and end the school year on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, according to the calendar approved at the meeting.  “I’ve had some questions from parents about masks,” Smith said. “I wish I could see into the future and give a definitive answer. It’s my hope that we don’t have to wear masks when we get back. We have not received that guidance yet.”
