Saving Sammy: From overcoming adversity, to helping others heal from their own traumas

HALIFAX, N.S. Jayson Baxter, producer and co-host of CTV News at 5, shares part five of the personal story of Saving Sammy, his family s beloved racehorse. It’s funny how life can take the most surprising turns when you lest expect it. When we found out that Samspace was still alive, on Dec. 3, 2019, my family and I were shocked and thrilled. When we managed to get Dad’s much-loved and long-lost racehorse safely out of a kill pen three days later, we were flooded with relief. I knew his rescue and return home would be so good, not only for Sammy, but for my 77-year-old father Denny Baxter, who’s never managed to get horses and harness racing out of his blood.

Saving Sammy: From facing certain death in a kill pen, to recovering on a Pennsylvania farm

HALIFAX, N.S. Jayson Baxter, producer and co-host of CTV News at 5, shares part three of the personal story of Saving Sammy, his family s beloved racehorse. “What’s her number Dad?” I asked. Sammy has women I consider his guardian angels. Kim Sloan is one of them. She used to train racehorses like him in Ohio. However, when her racing career ended she switched her focus to saving them instead. Sloan volunteers with the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, which rescues former racehorses from kill pens in the U.S. before they are sent for slaughter in Canada or Mexico. They found our Sammy, facing certain death in a Pennsylvania kill pen, the name of a farm or ranch where horses are gathered before shipment.

Saving Sammy: From the race track to a kill pen, a beloved horse finds his way home

Jayson Baxter, producer and co-host of CTV News at 5, shares the personal story of Saving Sammy, his family’s beloved racehorse. Sammy was going to be meat. A horse, so loved for the first five years of his life, was going to end up on a dinner plate somewhere in Europe, or maybe Asia. At 15, he was tired, severely dehydrated, fighting infection and scheduled for shipment and slaughter. He looked broken and emaciated as he stood in a Pennsylvania kill pen overcrowded with doomed horses. He was on death row, said my 75-year-old father Denny Baxter, eyes cast down to hide the tears.
