The Louisiana Department of Wildlife of Fisheries had to make a difficult decision to put down a black bear after it became a threat to public safety in Port Allen. LDWF Biologist Supervisor Scott Durham says after relocating the bear in the woods over the weekend it returned to the West Baton Rouge Parish town.
“Whenever a bear becomes a threat like that then unfortunately occasionally we’d have to put them down and that’s what we did in this case,” Durham said.
The bear was put down Tuesday night.
Durham says the bear demonstrated dangerous behaviors in his search for human-sourced food and even made its way on to a porch of someone’s home
LDWF Captures Black Bear in Port Allen
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries personnel captured an adult male Louisiana black bear in Port Allen on Tuesday night. Because the bear had become habituated and too reliant on human food sources, the decision was made to euthanize the animal.
“We’ve worked so hard to re-establish the Louisiana black bear population in our state and any time we have to euthanize one it is a hard decision,’’ LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet said. “This is always a last resort in these cases. Unfortunately, bears like this one, that have become too dependent on human food sources, cannot be successfully relocated. Public safety is our utmost concern and that’s why this difficult call was made.’’
Human Food-Loving Black Bear Put Down by LDWF
A black bear near Baton Rouge had to be euthanized this week after it got a taste and fell in love with human food.
It s certainly sad news any time one of these beautiful beasts has to be euthanized, but I can see why it had to happen. In this case, a black bear was discovered in a suburban area in Port Allen, and during its stay near humans, it got hooked on the food that humans eat. The stuff it can t obviously find in our Louisiana woods.
The Louisiana Department of Louisiana and Fisheries stepped in over the weekend and helped relocate the black bear deep in the woods. Everything seems fine and normal for a few days, until the bear ultimately returned this week. According to the LDWF, the bear displayed aggressive and potentially dangerous behavior in his return to town, while on his hunt for more human food. The bear even made his way onto a resident s home.
