Moose and elk attacks prompt warnings of potential aggressive wildlife
DENVER – Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials are issuing its annual warning to avoid elk, moose and deer that have newborn calves and fawns this time of year.
The alert was prompted by a pair of recent conflicts resulting in injuries to a pair of elderly men – one in Steamboat Springs on May 29 and the other in Evergreen on June 3.
Although both incidents were not believed to be sparked by irresponsible behavior, they do serve as examples that wildlife are just that, wild, and they can act in unpredictable ways. CPW reminds the public to respect wildlife and their space, especially at this time of the year.
Steamboat Springs area man injured in bear attack
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife responded late Sunday to a report of a man attacked by a bear at his home near Steamboat Springs in unincorporated Routt County.
At approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday, the homeowner noted the door to his garage, where he stored birdseed and other attractants, was open. He went to close the door and upon reaching the garage, the homeowner encountered a sow and two cubs.
As the man attempted to slowly back away from the garage, the sow attacked.
The bear caused serious injuries to the homeowner, including severe lacerations to the man’s head and legs that required surgery. The victim is in stable condition and his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Grizzly bear euthanized near Dupuyer after cattle depredations
DUPUYER – After receiving final authorization from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service a male grizzly was euthanized Wednesday after a series of calf depredations across five ranches in the Dupuyer area.
The 6-year-old bear weighing nearly 450 pounds was first tagged as a non-target capture east of Dupuyer in 2019, and bear managers identified it this spring by images collected on game cameras set at depredation sites. Despite repeated attempts, they were unable to trap the bear and it was shot when it returned to feed on one of the depredations along Dupuyer Creek late Wednesday evening.
