Gone but not forgotten: Panama City police remember fallen officers © TONY MIXON/NEWS HERALD Police officers raising the American Flag half-mast PANAMA CITY The Panama City Police Department honored fallen officers with its annual memorial observance Thursday morning. The gloomy clouds coverage was in keeping with the tone of the event. For Ryan Michael, who became a police officer in October, the service was a surreal moment. It s very important to remember those who have fallen in the line of duty, Michael said. It kind of gives you a little eye-opening experience when it comes to this job. Michael, 23, from San Antonio, Texas, wanted to be a police officer ever since he was a child. He said the observance showed him that nothing about law enforcement is routine.

Police Chief Scott Ervin said while it is important to remember those who have made the sacrifice, it is just as important to be a reminder to current officers. Any day, any shift, any time, we can be called upon to also pay that sacrifice in protection of our community, Ervin said. We also want to pay tribute to the families for the sacrifice they ve given up losing a loved one to perform this duty. There were several guest speakers at the observance, including Jesse Nelson, who is running for mayor of Lynn Haven. The guest speakers described how proud they are of the men and women who have sworn to protect and serve their community.
