PANAMA CITY Red, White & Q debuts Memorial Day weekend at McKenzie Park in the heart of downtown, boasting Southern flair and fare with a BBQ competition, cornhole tournament and country music. One of our board members is a big barbecue enthusiast; he wanted to bring something similar to Memphis in May, said Lori Allen, executive director of the Gulf Coast Children s Advocacy Center (GCCAC). This is our first year with a dozen competitors and we plan on moving it to a sanctioned event next year. They love that it s Memorial Day weekend and this is a destination.
Collaborating with the City of Panama City, the inaugural event sponsored by Payton Air benefits the GCCAC.
Police Chief Scott Ervin said while it is important to remember those who have made the sacrifice, it is just as important to be a reminder to current officers. Any day, any shift, any time, we can be called upon to also pay that sacrifice in protection of our community, Ervin said. We also want to pay tribute to the families for the sacrifice they ve given up losing a loved one to perform this duty.
There were several guest speakers at the observance, including Jesse Nelson, who is running for mayor of Lynn Haven. The guest speakers described how proud they are of the men and women who have sworn to protect and serve their community.
