If you travel Interstate 81 in Botetourt County, you can expect delays during the evening and overnight hours. Work will take place nightly between 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. this week. There will be alternating lane closures between mile markers 168 and 169 as crews pave. This work is part of the I-81 Safety Improvement Project. Exit 168 will be closed tonight.
Martinsville City leaders will present the city’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year to city council. Council will hold work session later this week and next with with a public hearing scheduled for May 25th. Council could vote to approve the budget on June 8th.
Salem, Mass., to See Citywide Fiber-Optic Network Buildout
Construction of a new citywide fiber-optic network is set to begin in the coming months through a no-cost contract between the city and New Jersey-based SiFi Networks. The work is expected to cost the company $35 million.

Shutterstock/Wangkun Jia (TNS) Construction on a citywide fiber optic Internet network is just months away, starting in neighborhoods along Highland Avenue, which will be among the first to get access to competition for Comcast s Xfinity Internet.
City leaders signed a contract this week with SiFi Networks a New Jersey-based company to create the infrastructure for a fiber optic network. SiFi will now build a network for homes, businesses and city government to get access to more Internet service options. The $35 million cost to build the network will come out of SiFi s pocket, at no cost to the city.

SALEM Ryan Anthony Wyatt, 24, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at his residence. He was born February 27, 1997 in Fort Myers, FL, a son of Mark Anthony Wyatt II and the late Teresa (Castelucci) Custer.
Ryan was a 2016 graduate of Salem High School. Ryan was working as a freelancer for online streaming. He truly enjoyed playing video games and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his father, Mark Wyatt of Quincy, IL; four brothers, William Wyatt of LaBelle, FL, Nathan Levans of Salem, Noah Levans of Salem, and Brodie Wyatt of Quincy, IL; paternal grandparents, Mark (Blanche) Anthony Wyatt of LaBelle, FL; maternal grandmother, Lois A. Castelucci of Salem; aunt and uncle, Jessy (Nola) W. Castelucci of Salem; aunt and uncle, Debbie (Dustin) Lewis of Okeechobee, FL; aunt and uncle, Rick (Louise) Young of Georgetown; and a host of cousins.
Essex Tech 239th statewide
The purpose of the rankings is to provide insight into academic performance among underserved groups, showing how well schools are supporting these students, according to the managing editor of education at U.S. News Anita Narayan.
Families can also use the rankings to see how schools compare at the national, state and local level on factors such as graduation rates and college readiness, Narayan said in a news release.
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia, was ranked No. 1 in the nation, as well as among magnet schools.
