Zeeland Board of Public Works to install smart electric meters
ZEELAND Zeeland City Council signed off on a nearly $1 million project June 7 to change over the city s electric utility meters to advanced meters, commonly known as smart meters.
Smart meters automatically send data about electricity usage to the Zeeland Board of Public Works utility, streamlining the meter reading process.
Zeeland Board of Public Works Electric Transmission and Distribution Manager Tracey DeKraker said the new meters would be more accurate and come with additional benefits, like automatic and immediate notification to the utility of loss of power, which helps ZBPW respond to outages faster.

ZEELAND Zeeland officials voted to keep the city s tax rate steady, extending what was originally a temporary one-year tax cut of 1 mill for another year.
The tax cut is council s attempt to provide some economic relief to residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
City council approved the next fiscal year s budget, which included a tax rate of 10.1354 mills, at its May 3 meeting. Zeeland s fiscal year begins July 1.
Property values are rising in the city, resulting in a projected increase in property tax revenue of $120,000 for the next fiscal year.
Offsetting that income boost, however, are projected decreases in the amount of interest the city expects to earn on its investments and the amount of state revenue-sharing dollars it receives as a slice of the state s sales tax collection.
