Pupils travel 40km to write exams BY MOSES MUGUGUNYEKI Grade 7 pupils at Chiwenga Primary School in Muzarabani district, who for many years had to endure a 40km distance to go and write final examinations at Chadereka Primary School, have been rescued from the ordeal following the construction of a classroom block by the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS). Chiwenga Primary School, which is on the border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique, was established in 1984. However, over the years, the school which also enrolls students from Mozambique has not been conducting Grade 7 final examinations as it fell short of the Zimbabwe School Examination Council (Zimsec) requirements.

According to the proportional representative MP, Zimsec, a parastatal, had on several occasions, ignored the committee requests and any other engagements. “Mr. Speaker Sir, about a month ago when I was presenting on behalf of the Committee on Primary and Secondary Education Report to this House, I raised an issue of concern and that issue was that Zimsec which is a parastatal where we have asked as a Committee to have them make presentations to us, have constantly refused to do so and have come back to us and asked to engage it, the Director of Zimsec has constantly refused to do so.

Byo teacher launches Ndebele book BY DARLINGTON MWASHITA A TEACHER at Senzangakhona Primary School in Bulawayo, Benson Jiyane has penned his debut book, titled IMpehlalwazi Yolimi lwesiNdebele which is a collection of short stories and poems themed around the life of Ndebele people. The book was printed by Dreamdicovery Publishers. Jiyane told NewsDay Life & Style yesterday that the book revive the Ndebele words which were spoken long back, but were no longer being used by the present generation. “The book has marketed itself by its title, I have been approached by the Zimbabwe School Examination Council (Zimsec) assessor who pleaded for the book to be a syllabus,” he said.

Covid-19 – Union Urges Teachers to Shun Zimsec Marking January 25, 2021 Teachers around the country who usually offer services to the Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC) through marking exams have been urged to avoid that this time around in the interest of the safety. This was said in a statement weekend by the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) President, Takavafira Zhou. The trade union boss said the education practitioners must value their lives and avoid being victims of the Covid-19 pandemic. This comes barely a week after it was reported that some ‘O’ Level invigilators were last week paid with plates of sadza instead of money.
