Walking was freedom in lockdown. These books show us why it's so much more.

June 10, 2021 Sibbie O’Sullivan THE WASHINGTON POST – Two years ago, while walking, I fell – bam! – on my right knee, shattering my femur against the artificial knee I’d had installed five years earlier. First I felt amazement, then pain, then the existential dread of lying on the street wondering if anyone would hear my cries for help, then the ambulance, then my surgeon, then a brand new artificial knee, a larger one with an eight-inch rod that fit inside my femur. I was alive, grateful and bullish about rehab, but my ramblin’, dancin’ days were over. I’d walk again – slowly but not far. Still, walking, as so many people have discovered during the coronavirus pandemic, is freedom. Two new books remind us that it’s also so much more. Right away, you know what Shane O’Mara, a neuroscientist, thinks about walking.

Events: Forever young – a Bob Dylan 80th birthday celebration Henry Wagons, Adalita, Mick Thomas, Lisa Miller, Charles Jenkins, Rebecca Barnard and Charm of Finches and more plus... Nichaud Fitzgibbon (arvo) — Triple R 102.7FM, Melbourne Independent Radio

None of us are getting any younger, but certain things are apparently ageless. And while Bob Dylan may be turning 80, his vast catalogue of songs – songs written over a period now spanning about 50 years – remains as wondrous, relevant and life-affirming as ever. It is a body of work that has, indeed, remained forever young. St Kilda’s historic MEMO Music Hall celebrates Bob’s 80th with “Forever Young – A Bob Dylan 80th Birthday Celebration”. Backed by a band hand-picked by the maestro Shane O’Mara and performed over two big nights, our million-dollar birthday bash will feature a cast of Melbourne’s finest vocalists and Dylanophiles, each performing songs that are enmeshed in the very fabric of their musical lives. Henry Wagons, Adalita, Mick Thomas, Lisa Miller, Charles Jenkins, Rebecca Barnard and Charm of Finches; these are just some of the artists who will dig deep and give their very best – for you and for Bob. And there are more to be announced.
