Residents Appealing Town Council Rezoning Decision

Fort Frances, ON, Canada / 93.1 The Border May 27, 2021 | 7:26 AM The fight to keep a proposed housing project off a former school playground appears headed to a provincial tribunal. Fort Frances council last month approved a rezoning of the former St. Michael School site to help pave the way for the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board project. It includes a plan to build as many as five eight-plexes on what was the school playground. Residents sent letters and filed a position to the town in opposition to no avail. A group has now come together to continue the opposition. Scott Fawcett says they’re now turning to the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal.

St Michael s in council tonight – Fort Frances Times

Staff Writer memara@fortfrances.com The rezoning request submitted by the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board (RRDSSAB) to change St. Michael’s zoning from Institutional Type One (I) to Residential Type Two (R2) is making an appearance on tonight’s council agenda. This comes after a public meeting was held two weeks ago where some members of the public had the chance to express either their support of or opposition to the development request. If council approves the rezoning request tonight, the property on which the former St. Michael’s school was located will be renovated to 13 housing units for seniors, with the inclusion of an EarlyON nursery.

Council To Discuss Rezoning Request

Fort Frances, ON, Canada / 93.1 The Border Apr 26, 2021 11:13 AM A request to rezone the former St. Michael’s School property to permit low rent apartments comes back to town council tonight. The Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board is behind the project. The town has received eighty letters from area residents objecting to the rezoning. Many are upset with a proposal to have five eight-plexes on what was the school’s playground. A report from administration notes the land is private property, and the town has no authority to order the greenspace and playground remain open. It also states it’s not within the town’s authority to negotiate land swaps as part of a rezoning request.
