People invited to share memories of folk festival on 40th anniversary

THIS weekend should usually feature toe-tapping tunes and late night sessions as Shetland becomes a focal point of the folk music scene. However, after being cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Shetland Folk Festival 2021 is also off. The first festival was in 1981, meaning that the event is celebrating its 40th year. 8 of 13Adverts In the absence of the festival, people are being invited to share their memories, photos and videos of the popular event. They can upload them to social media with the hashtag #ShetlandFolkFestival, or tag Promote Shetland and Shetland Folk Festival. People’s memories will then be shared by the folk festival team, while a Promote Shetland blog will also spread the joy.

Edinburgh Tradfest reveals the truth about Scottish history s rebellious women

THE stories of women who rebelled against societal norms and expectations as told in Scotland’s traditional songs will be explored by singer/songwriter Karine Polwart in the live streamed finale of Edinburgh Tradfest. Polwart will also reflect on the history of misogyny and sexual violence in her inaugural Rebellious Truth lecture. Presented in partnership with the Department of Celtic and Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh, the evening will explore Scotland’s passion for the traditional arts, their history and future, and will mix live performances and presentations from School of Scottish Studies traditional artist in residence Mike Vass, as well as Polwart. The event will be live streamed from St Cecilia’s Hall in Edinburgh on May 10.
