ALPENA Those who serve on municipal councils say they strive to make difficult decisions that best serve everyone in their community.

Three members of city councils around Northeast Michigan talked to The News about those issues:
BIG-PICTURE, WHAT IS YOUR JOB?

∫ During its monthly meeting on Feb. 17, the Alpena County Finance Committee voted to recommend to the board of commissioners a host of spending requests.
The committee voted to approve the 2021 Michigan Department of Natural Resources Marine Grant renewal application for the sheriff’s office in the amount of $12,143. Wages and benefits will consume $7,793 of the funds, and $600 for oil changes and minor maintenance. Fuel for the boat and tow vehicles will eat up $3,750, if the grant request is approved by the state. There is no County match if the county is awarded federal funds, and if it comes from State funds, the county would have a $3,035 match.
A divided Crossett City Council adopted a budget for the coming fiscal year Monday night, Dec. 21. The point of contention was nearly a quarter million dollars.
Four council members, C.T. Foster, James Knight, Kerstin Mondragon and Sheila Phillips, voted in favor of the budget.Â
Councilmen Dale Martinie and Cary Carter voted in the minority when casting votes against the proposal.
Carter said that he thought the budget should be cut by approximately $200,000. Mayor Crystal Marshall said the budget had already been cut by 8 percent â approximately $468,226 â when compared to the 2020 budget.
âI donât want to make cuts or lay people off unless it is absolutely necessary,â Marshall said. âIf I start laying people off, then Iâm afraid others will panic and lay people off and we are going to start seeing a ripple effect on our town.â
