Good News: TPC Sawgrass chefs prepare meal for Ronald McDonald House

The weeks leading up to The Players Championship in March are an especially busy time for TPC Sawgrass chefs. But that didn t stop Azhar Mohammad, senior executive chef, and his team from traveling to Ronald McDonald House with cars full of fresh food to prepare a meal for its residents.  The nonprofit in San Marco provides lodging, meals and transportation for families of critically ill and seriously injured children who are receiving treatment at local hospitals. “Food is love, and being able to welcome people into our kitchen is one of the sincerest things you can do,” said Vernetta Stewart, house executive chef. “To take time to service another kitchen or meal program speaks volumes to Chef Azhar and his team’s commitment.”

The city issued a permit Feb. 6 for Ash Construction LLC to start work on remodeling the former Kmart along 9600 San Jose Blvd. toward converting it into a retail center for multiple uses. The permit is for interior and exterior work on 16,100 square feet of 95,700 square feet of space at a cost of $762,548. The work comprises interior demolition, storefront work, roofing and other work to convert the building into an empty shell in preparation for tenant build-out. Jacksonville-based Ash Properties also wants to expand the building, plans show. Doherty Sommers Architects Engineers Inc. is the project architect. Ash Properties did not immediately respond to an email for comment Feb. 8.

Sun-Ray owners opening drive-in movie theater at Metro site

The owners of Jacksonville s Sun-Ray Cinema are in talks to buy the Metro Entertainment Complex and are opening a drive-in movie theater on part of the site. The first movies will show this weekend at Sun-Ray s Foremost Drive-in, named for the Foremost Dairy that once sat on the site.  It will be the first time in more than a dozen years that Jacksonville has had a dedicated drive-in theater. Sun-Ray has been showing films at several temporary locations throughout the pandemic, playing host to at least 60 showings for about 15,000 viewers. The Playtime Drive-in on Blanding Boulevard was the last full-time drive-in in the city, closing in 2008.

Jacksonville-based Ash Properties applied to the city for a permit for interior and exterior remodeling on the 95,662-square-foot building at a cost of $762,548. The work comprises interior demolition, storefront work, roofing and other work to convert the building into an empty shell in preparation for tenant build-out. Ash Properties also wants to expand the building by 16,011 square feet to 111,673 square feet of space, plans show. Ash Construction LLC is the contractor for the project, shown on the permit application at $762,548.
