The recovery rate in the state is 86.24%. GUWAHATI: For the second consecutive day on Saturday, Assam recorded more than 5,000 fresh cases of Covid-19, while 50 people lost their lives to the virus. A total of 5,756 cases were recorded during the past 24 hours, health officials said. The overall positivity percentage hovered around 8.84, after conducting 65,140 tests. The highest number of positive cases were recorded in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, where 1,543 more people tested positive during the past 24 hours. The recovery rate in the state is 86.24%. The pace of the virus spread during the second wave remains unchanged in Assam, health experts said, even as there has been no stopping in the spiralling of number of new cases in the state.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal holds a meeting with senior doctors of ICMR-RMRC in Diburgarh on Saturday GUWAHATI: With more than 7,000 active patients in Guwahati and the number rising by the day, just about 10% of the beds are available at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) the biggest government hospital in the region. Officials, though, claimed that the capacity is being increased as more patients requiring oxygen are getting admitted to GMCH. GMCH principal Dr Achyut Baishya said in six government hospitals in and around the city, over 90% beds reserved for Covid patients are full. “We are heading towards an extremely extremely dangerous situation. In March, the entire state detected 875 Covid cases, while the cases went up close to 35,000 an increase of 400% or four times of the detection of Covid cases in one month. This is worrisome, as over 1,800 beds of 2,000 are occupied as of today,” Baishya said on Saturday.

35000 counting officials and agents undergo Covid testing | Guwahati News

A healthcare worker takes a nasal swab from a polling agent in Tezpur on Friday GUWAHATI: Nearly 35,000 counting officials and agents, who will be on duty on May 2, underwent mandatory Covid-19 tests in Assam on Friday following an order from the the Election Commission. Police personnel to be engaged in security at the counting venues across the state have also undergone Covid-19 tests. However, in a few districts, including Kamrup (Metro), testing will continue on Saturday also. Assam health department on Wednesday issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) with clear instructions that the testing must be done on Friday in pre-notified testing centres while maintaining social distancing norms.
