Shaughn & Sharon Clements Award - Department of Biological Sciences

Donor Story: The Clements Sharon Clements was born in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to New Westminster, BC, in 1952. She was a Charter Student at Simon Fraser University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1969 and entered the graduate program, receiving her Master of Science in 1974. As a Mature Student she entered the Spatial Information Systems (Geography) Program, receiving her diploma in 2000. Sharon began working for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in 1972 specializing in  Pathology and Entomology and continued working there until her retirement in 1997. Shaughn Clements was born in Warwick, England, emigrating to Canada in 1946.  He has lived quite a nomadic life, having attended 25 schools in three countries before graduating Grade 13 in Guelph, Ontario.  He enrolled at SFU in 1966 – taking a one year break at the request of his previous employer to manage and reorganize one of the company departments – and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1971.  After g

Hip replacement can t come fast enough for local couple

She is a retired registered nurse who worked at UHNBC for 25 years. In November 2020, Sharon was placed on a waiting list and there s still no date scheduled for the surgery. A hip replacement is considered an elective surgery, which means that if left untreated your ailment won t kill you. But there s a lot to be said for quality of life. Sharon can only sleep for short periods of time because of the constant pain her deteriorated right hip causes. Sharon can t walk without a walker, can t climb the stairs in her home, can t drive and can’t do the things she has always loved doing, like quadding, skiing, snowshoeing and canoeing.

Dave was born on February 25, 1961 to Dennis and Sharon Clements, in Toronto, Ontario. Dave worked various jobs throughout his life, most recently as a baker for Bennett’s. Before that he worked at Mount Baldy and Wild Waters, where his love of paddling flourished. Dave lived his life to the fullest, always up for an adventure. Whether it was kayaking, camping, snowboarding, biking, he could always be found outside with an infectious smile on his face saying, “It’s all good!” He loved music and was a talented musician. Dave was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. People who knew him as a kid would say he was spunky, if you knew him as an adult, you’d say the spunk never left him! Dave was a generous man, so full of life; he would give the shirt off his back to someone in need.
