Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra Will Perform Basie, Blues, and More Next Month
The Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra (CJRO) performs the best of Count Basie and other world-renowned jazz artists on Sunday, June 6 at 2 p.m. at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 S. Allison Parkway, Lakewood, CO 80226.
Featuring many of the best jazz musicians in the area, the CJRO will perform a variety of blues, jazz, and Latin classics including Count Basie s Blues in Hoss Flat , Stan Kenton s A Little Minor Blues, Chick Corea s Armando s Rhumba and even Corner Pocket, reimagined as a cha-cha by Drew Zaremba. Critically acclaimed vocalist, Heidi Schmidt will sing Avalon and many other favorites in a concert that will delight every blues and jazz lover. Ron Carter, Emmet Cohen, Terri Lyne Carrington and Maria Schneider claimed some of the top honours of this year’s JJA Jazz Awards.
The winners and nominees were chosen by the votes of the members of the Jazz Journalists Association.
Carrington was named musician of the year for 2021, besting fellow nominees Schneider, Charles Lloyd and William Parker. The drummer, composer, producer and educator was recently named an NEA Jazz Master, and her latest work includes the 2019 album
Waiting Game with Social Science. The Jazz Journalists Association also named her drummer of the year.
Carter received JJA Jazz Awards’ lifetime achievement award. After being closed for a year because of COVID-19, Good Times Jazz Bar & Restaurant has finally reopened and returned to providing the excellent food and music that made it an essential spot for jazz lovers in Savannah.
“We’re excited to be open,” said Chef Joe Randall, the legendary Savannah chef who came out of retirement to share his expertise with the restaurant. “It’s one of those things where we waited a year in order to get things right and want everybody to be safe.”
Good Times celebrated its grand reopening with an invitation-only event featuring fine wine, hors d’oeuvres, and an all-star band.
