Wellsville, neighboring towns forgo Memorial Day parades
Staff reports
Villages and towns in Allegany County have taken a cautious approach to traditional Memorial Day events for a second straight year as COVID-19 restrictions ease in New York state.
The Village of Wellsville is not holding its traditional parade but ceremonies led by American Legion Post 702 will continue at Veterans Memorial Park at 10 a.m.
Mayor Randy Shayler said the decision was made in consultation with the Legion.
“The logic behind that goes back to the Health Department and the governor’s requirements. The decision was made that it doesn’t work this year,” said Shayler.

WELLSVILLE The Wellsville Village Board started a new tradition Monday night, honoring its outgoing fire chief with a plaque in appreciation of his service.
Michael “Barney” Dillie recently completed his two-year term as chief of the Wellsville Fire Department. Dillie previously served a pair of two-year terms as second- and first-assistant chief, with the plaque marking all six years of service to the village from 2015-2021.
