MIDDLETOWN Despite rising COVID-19 cases, the city is faring better than most of Connecticut in terms of positivity rate and fatalities, but maintaining that level demands continued vigilance even as people begin to be vaccinated, officials said.
“The trends have continued in the same direction, unfortunately,” Mayor Ben Florsheim said. Still, treatments have vastly improved since spring, and supplies of personal protective equipment and other materials have been greatly boosted. “It allows our health care workers to be more on the ball in terms of their response,” he said.

MIDDLETOWN The district’s need for consistent learning, as well as assuring the $87.35 million middle school project will be finished on time are the reasoning behind the schools chief not calling a snow day due to the snowstorm, he said.
Middletown Superintendent of Schools Michael Conner, who issued a day of remote learning for Thursday and possibly Friday, said he is taking a proactive approach to issues facing the district. “In two days, cohorts A and B would have roughly four hours of in-person or remote instruction,” a lack of teaching time he said he wants to avoid, calling it a “student-centric decision.”
