Chetola Resort at Blowing Rock: Local fare, historic inn, lots of mountain fun

Renata Parker Named after the Cherokee word for “haven of rest,” Chetola Resort has long been a favorite getaway for outdoor activities. Located on 78 wooded acres in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, this historic manor house was once the home of J. Luther Snyder, who purchased the estate in 1926. Known as the Coca-Cola King of the Carolinas, Snyder was a successful salesman. He began his career selling soda from a one-horse wagon, eventually operating multiple Coca-Cola bottling plants in the Charlotte area. Snyder and his wife loved to entertain and held numerous extravagant parties at the estate that were the talk of Blowing Rock in the 1930s and ‘40s.

My New Orleans 12/31/2020 Travelers this time of year are usually looking to escape Carnival. While there’s not much to escape from this year, there’s still the invigorating slopes for those looking to getaway. Many New Orleanians head west to the Rockies, but great skiing and other winter attractions exist to the east in North Carolina and many times it’s more affordable.  Three major ski resorts lie within 50 miles of each other in North Carolina’s High Country, about a five-hour drive from Atlanta, and all offer different experiences. In fact, North Carolina owns the highest ski areas and the largest snow tubing on the East Coast. 

Carolinas Audi Club gives check to Western Watauga Center

SUGAR GROVE — The Carolinas Chapter of the Audi Club North America had their annual driving event in Blowing Rock earlier this year, and recently donated a check for $1,700 to the Western Watauga Community Center. Cindy Lamb, the director of the Western Watauga Community Center, said the Audi Club had called her wanting to donate money that had been collecting to support the center’s home delivered meals program offered through Project on Aging of Watauga County. Lamb said the donating will greatly help the program. She added that the Audi Club members had said that they like to support programs in the county that their event is held in each year.

Watauga County health inspections

Dec. 17 Appalachian Ski Mtn. food service, located at 940 Ski Mountain Road in Blowing Rock, received an “A” grade and a final score of 90. The restaurant received a one-and-a-half-point demerit for unclean food-contact surfaces, a three-point demerit for improper hot holding temperatures, a one-and-a-half-point demerit for improper date marking and disposition, a one-point demerit for improper time procedures, a one-point demerit for improper food labeling, a half-point demerit for improperly stored single-use articles, a one-point demerit for unmaintained equipment and a half-point demerit for unmaintained facilities. Appalachian Ski Mtn. food service received a 93 and a 91 in its previous two inspections. Dec. 18
