Florida s space tourism industry
While some early space-tourism flights may start in Texas or New Mexico, Florida will be at the forefront of the industry; it already has four commercial spaceports and more are coming, says Frank DiBello, president and CEO of Space Florida, the state’s aerospace economic development agency. Tourism companies are at work creating a total family experience, he says. “We have all the accoutrements to make space flights an experience not only for the citizen astronaut but for his or her family. The 5,400-square-foot store should be able to accommodate a stage, backstage amenities and up to 140 audience members per performance, Skaggs said in an interview before the official announcement was made in an online video featuring a performance of “Home” from the musical “The Wiz.”
“We are excited. It’s right off the main entrance and there’s great parking,” Skaggs said, adding that the mall owners were “pleased with having something that’s non-retail occupy the space. The storefront is just inside the mall entrance closest to Connors Steak & Seafood.
Parking was one of the issues that led the Players Centre to announce in 2016 that it would sell its longtime home on U.S. 41 just north of downtown Sarasota and move into a three-theater complex in the Waterside community in the Sarasota County portion of Lakewood Ranch.
