Users reported trouble loading Gmail, Slack and Zoom - apps that have become necessities to keep work-from-home life running smoothly during the coronavirus pandemic. Downdetector, which tracks reports of outages, showed widespread issues with Verizon, Google, Zoom, YouTube, Slack, Amazon Web Services and others Tuesday just before noon. The issue seemed to be stemming from problems with the Verizon Fios Internet service, though the company did not quickly confirm issues. The cause of the outage is unclear so far. Downdetector, a crowd-sourced site that tracks tech problems, reported spikes in issues with Verizon, Gmail, Zoom, YouTube, and cloud provider Amazon Web Services, all concentrated on the East Coast.  On Twitter, which many were still able to access, users reported the problems in real time, with some suspecting the root was Verizon Fios high-speed internet.

Major internet outage hits customers across northeast US By Kelly Hayes A widespread internet outage was reported Tuesday, impacting many customers across the northeast U.S.  In an emailed statement 90 minutes after the outage was first reported, Verizon said it was working on the problem hurting Fios service throughout the Northeast corridor and that some service had already been restored. Down Detector, a website that offers real-time status updates on outages, showed thousands of reports of issues with Verizon Fios service earlier Tuesday impacting both landline internet and mobile internet. The telecom giant had reported a cut fiber in Brooklyn via Twitter, although it’s not clear if that issue was responsible for the entire outage. Verizon didn t give any estimate in its email about when the problem would be fixed and didn t reply to questions about what caused the problem.

The Prince William Times reported Tuesday that Benjamin Plummer was captured on video shot by a student talking about his experience at the Capitol on Jan. 6 when which insurgents and supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building, the newspaper reported. The paper reported that a letter written by Principal Hamish Brewer to parents saying that Plummer had been placed on leave.

The short video circulating on social media appears to show Benjamin Plummer, a teacher and soccer coach at Fred Lynn Middle School in Woodbridge, talking to students about the Jan. 6 march and attack on the Capitol. In the video, the teacher says, “I was there. That’s what I witnessed. . When I heard the media just blaming Trump supporters the whole time, I knew then that it was a setup.”
