City Council votes to return to committee format

KNBN NewsCenter1 August 3, 2021 RAPID CITY, S.D. On Monday night, the Rapid City Common Council voted to return to the committee format effective September 14. On Wednesday, July 28, the council had a lengthy discussion on whether to move away from the current working session, as the format can go on too long for members with full time jobs. Public Works Committee meetings will be held on Tuesdays prior to Council meetings while Legal and Finance Committee meetings will be conducted on Wednesdays before council sessions. Both meetings will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. The working session format was approved by the Council on a trial basis last fall in an effort to promote more efficient discussion and dialogue between Council members and City department staff.

There’s talk of going back to committee meetings and moving away from the working session, namely the Public Works, and Legal and Finance Committees. The idea is to allow city directors to inform council members about their items before taking them to the full council. The new format is informal and only allows for discussion on the items with no recommendations of actions taken during the session until council meets.

Common Council to make Vision Fund duration, committee decisions Monday

KNBN NewsCenter1 May 12, 2021 RAPID CITY, S.D. The Rapid City Common Council will decide the duration for the next round of Vision Funds, as well as approve a committee next Monday. The two items from the Mayor went before the working session Wednesday afternoon for discussion, and with no members having comment on the items, they now move to the Council’s meeting on Monday. In a letter to the Council, Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender proposed a three-year project plan duration. He also included guidelines such as applicants must show ability to fund project up front, Vision Funds would not allowed for operational funding, and awarded projects that acquire real estate property will be owned in full or in part by the City of Rapid City. Also included in the letter was a list of thirteen applicants for the Vision Fund Citizen Committee.

KNBN NewsCenter1 May 12, 2021 RAPID CITY, S.D. The Rapid City Common Council awarded a bid for a project the day after bidding opened. The council met Wednesday afternoon to discuss and approve a bid for the Elk Vale Gravity Main and Force Main Project. The project will upgrade two sewer force mains to sixteen inches and the gravity main to twenty-four inches. These new upgrades necessary to keep up with city growth are expected to sustain growth for the next fifty years. According to Public Works Director Dale Tech, the reason for quick special session is the current uncertainty over future cost of commodities.
