Thousands of Victorian students ditch the ATAR

Advertisement A record 4175 year 12 students ditched the ATAR last year and completed VCE without a study score as universities offered new alternative pathways to enrolment. In all, 8.3 per cent of year 12 students completed an unscored VCE in 2020, data given to The Age by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority reveals. ATAR results: How and when to access your ATAR

What is the ATAR? The ATAR is the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, which is a tool designed to assist tertiary institutions when selecting students for courses. It provides an overall measure of a student’s relative performance in their VCE studies. The ATAR is created by VTAC using the results from a student’s successful completion of the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education), as assessed and administered by the VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority). VCE students will receive a study score from the VCAA for each study a student completes, which reflects their relative performance in that study only. So that institutions can fairly compare students who have chosen different subject combinations, VTAC applies a process of scaling to each study score before it is used in the calculation of the ATAR.

Teenagers would mill outside the old Broadway presses late at night, waiting to intercept the inky pages. A version of that tradition will continue on Monday, when the Herald will print the names of the state’s highest achievers. Julina Lim, from Cabramatta High School, got an ATAR of 99.95.
