A big second half for the Windermere Prep girls soccer team was more than enough to seal up a 3-0 win over Foundation Academy at home Thursday, Jan. 28.
In the first half the Lakers (9-2) had plenty of opportunities on goal, but a combination of overshot balls and stellar goalkeeping by Lions goalie Avery Bangsund who finished the night with 24 saves helped the Lions (6-6-1) keep the home side in check. The Lakers best chance to score in the opening half came when junior Courtney Mogauro was taken down in the box for a penalty kick, before sending her shot wide.

In Windermere Prep’s 72-48 win in boys basketball over Seffner Christian Saturday, Jan. 23, senior guard Zavien Williams scored 14 points in a game in which he also scored the 1,000th point of his successful high school career. In the win for the Lakers, Jayden Williams also added 19 points, while Drew Kousaie picked up 14 points.

A busy weekend saw competitive cheer teams from around the Observer coverage area take to the mat during the FHSAA state championships Friday, Jan. 22, and Saturday, Jan. 23, in Lakeland at the RP Funding Center. In Class 1A, Foundation Academy finished runner-up for the second consecutive year in the medium division (non-tumbling), while Windermere Prep finished fourth in
King realized early on in her life that teaching was her true calling.
Going through school, she was conscientious of the other students around her and noticed they all had different learning styles. The “cookie-cutter classroom,” she said, didn’t give students who struggled a fighting chance.
“I knew that I wanted to be that teacher that would help all students find their strengths and focus on their abilities so that they could learn and grow from that,” King said. “There’s nothing more in the world that I want to do than just nurture students’ intellectual, social and emotional growth by giving them those hands-on experiences that a lot of times we didn’t get when we were young.”

Cheerleaders around the state have descended upon the RP Funding Center in Lakeland this weekend for the FHSAA competitive cheerleading state championships.
The action started off today Friday, Jan. 22 with the Class 1A competition that includes Windermere Prep participating in the small non-tumbling division and Foundation Academy competing in the medium non-tumbling division. Meanwhile, in Class 2A action on Day Two of the competition on Saturday, Dr. Phillips, Olympia, Windermere and Ocoee will compete in the small-non tumbling division, as West Orange takes on the competition in the large varsity division.

1. The Foundation boys basketball team had an absolute barn-burner in their 100-96, double-overtime victory over Seven Rivers Christian Saturday, Jan. 16. Leading the way for the Lions (5-5) was a double-double for freshman Jacob Crain, who exploded for 29 points on 14-of-21 shooting (67%) and 14 rebounds both of which led the team. Teammates Jacob Osborne and Grayson Bishop each added 16 and 15 points, respectively.
2. CFCA’s Nick Rodriguez helped lead the Eagles boys basketball team to an 84-72 win over Calvary Christian (Clearwater) Friday, Jan. 15. The junior combo guard recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points while dishing out 12 assists.
