Deaconess Hospital officials confirmed Monday that the delta variant, a stronger and more contagious strain of COVID-19, has taken root in the Evansville area.
The hospital system recently received confirmation from the Indiana State Department of Health, which has been sequencing virus samples from Deaconess for the past few weeks. Dr. April Abbott, Deaconess’ director of microbiology, said that of the 34 samples that have come back, 30 tested positive for delta. That means it’s now the predominant mutation in the region.
Abbott and Deaconess Health Systems President Dr. James Porter answered a few of the Courier & Press’ questions on Monday. Here are some things to know.
