Fire chief coping with firefighter Morse s death

WATERTOWN — Fire Chief Matthew Timerman went down to see how Peyton Morse and a fellow recruit were doing with training at the New York State Academy of Fire Science on March 3. He gave words of encouragement to Mr. Morse, wished the young recruit well and told him he’d see him back in Watertown over the weekend. He and the small contingent of city firefighters left the academy at about 12:30 p.m. after the visit that day. It was the last time the chief saw Mr. Morse alive. A memorial honors fallen firefighters, where Peyton Morse’s name will soon be added, outside of the Emma Flower Taylor Fire Station on South Massey Street on Friday in Watertown. Watertown continues advocating for rideshare fees

Jack Thornton/Correspondent Wicked Local State and local officials from Watertown continue to support a measure to increase fees on Uber and Lyft rides in Massachusetts, believing such a measure would both decrease traffic congestion and help fund state public transportation services. The proposed increase would see a $1.20 fee on individual passenger rides and a 40 cent fee on shared rides, as well as an additional 20 cent fee on rides occurring in Boston or its neighboring communities such as Belmont, Cambridge, and Watertown.  The measure was included in January’s transportation bonds bill, but was vetoed by Gov. Charlie Baker while much of the remaining bill was signed into law. Several notable transportation advocates disagreed with the governor’s veto, including State Representative Steven Owens, D-Watertown.

For the next couple of months we’ll be alright. This is alright,” said Shawn Griffin of Watertown.
