And now, the automotive industry is getting ready for a new massive upgrade, as HERE has joined forces with Leia and Continental to offer 3D maps as pre-loaded software for automotive OEMs.
More specifically, HERE will contribute with HERE Premier 3D cities, a platform providing access to highly accurate 3D map data. Earlier this month, HERE announced a large update that brings 3D models of 75 city centers across the world, with structures accurately reproduced with physical location, volume, elevation, and façade color information.
Leia will provide the Lightfield Automotive Software Development Kit, while Continental will supply the display solution, with the mix eventually supposed to provide OEMs with a modern navigation experience that comes pre-loaded with the car and therefore doesn’t require other applications.
One of the new features coming to Google Maps on Android is the driving mode, which essentially turns the navigation app into a central hub for the experience behind the wheel.

The new 3D models have been specifically created to provide a high level of detail, so they accurately reproduce not only the physical location but also the volume size, the elevation, and the façade color of each structure.
The HERE 3D city models are already installed on the MIB2+ infotainment system on the Audi A8, and more carmakers are likely to adopt the system on their vehicles.
However, the navigation industry isn’t the only one to benefit from these 3D city models, as HERE says it can also help urban planning and government operations, filmmaking, AR and VR applications, and even videogame development whenever an accurate 3D version of a location is required.

Not a long time ago, the directions provided by Google Maps to a young Russian driver sent him and his friend to an abandoned road, eventually causing one of them to freeze to death while the other ended up in hospital in severe condition. 1 photo
And now, Google Maps navigation has contributed to another unfortunate event, as a 34-year-old driver ended up with the car in the water, eventually drowning because he didn’t know how to swim.
It happened in India where 34-year-old Satish Ghule was driving his boss and a friend towards Kalsubai, Maharashtra’s highest peak, for trekking. The driver didn’t know the route, so he turned to Google Maps for help.
